Samsung bans internal user ChatGPT after source code leak

Korean tech giant Samsung has announced an internal ban on the use of AI chatbot ChatGPT, the company announced to staff in a memo.

The move comes after Samsung engineers used the bot to help them fix some bugs in the internal source code, which inadvertently ended up becoming part of the ChatGPT data set.

The ban covers use on any company device, desktop or mobile, and follows an internal survey on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools that found that 65 percent of respondents see it as a risk of security.

“Interest in generative AI platforms like ChatGPT has been growing internally and externally,” the memo says. seen by Bloomberg and other media, read. “While this interest focuses on the utility and efficiency of these platforms, there are also growing concerns about the security risks posed by generative AI.”

“We ask that you diligently comply with our security guidelines, and failure to do so may result in a breach or compromise of company information, resulting in disciplinary action up to and including termination.”

The ban is broad for all generative AI platforms, including those from Microsoft and Google. But the memo goes on to say that Samsung is looking for a solution to the problem.

“Headquarters is reviewing security measures to create a safe environment for the safe use of generative AI to improve employee productivity and efficiency,” the memo said. “However, until these measures are prepared, we will temporarily restrict the use of generative AI.”

Whether this means Samsung is working on its own internal AI tools is still up in the air.
