Queensland Premier slams LNP’s deepfake TikTok video

Steven Miles calls his deepfake video “a turning point for our democracy.”

Queensland Premier Steven Miles responded angrily to a post by the state’s Liberal National Party on TikTok after the party posted a deepfake of Miles dancing a jig.

“Point of view: My rent has gone up $60 a week, my electric bill has gone up 20%, but the Prime Minister made a sandwich on TikTok,” the deepfake post read.

Miles regularly posts discussions about government policies on TikTok, often while making a sandwich.

The video features a disclaimer that says, “The creator has been labeled as AI-generated,” but Miles was still outraged after the post was made.

Miles asked the state opposition leader to explain the party’s actions.

“Mr Crisafulli needs to explain why he thinks this is right. It is a test of his character. In a time when misinformation is everywhere, we as politicians have a duty to communicate with our audiences and voters clearly and honestly,” Miles said in a statement to the ABC.

In a subsequent statement to the media, Miles said the incident was “a turning point for our democracy.”

“Until now, we knew that photographs could be retouched or retouched. But we have been trained to believe what we see in videos, and for a political party to now be willing to use AI to make videos of deepfake attacks is a very dangerous turning point,” Miles said.

“And that means Queenslanders between now and October will have to question everything they see from the LNP and ask: is this real? Or is it a deepfake?

Miles added that the Labor Party would refrain from using similar tactics in its communications.
