Chipmaker AMD confirms data breach investigation following hacker claims
A notorious hacker has posted technical data and details of AMD employees on a popular hacking forum, as the company suggests it was a third-party hack, and Apple could be the next victim.
After a hacker posted the details of silicon giant AMD’s employees on a hacking forum, the company confirmed that it is investigating the incident.
IntelBroker, which has published data on dozens of victims since it was first observed in 2022, shared a sample of AMD data on June 17 and said: “In June 2024, AMD, a large computing company, suffered a data breach.”
“Compromised data: Future AMD products, spec sheets, employee databases, customer databases, proprietary files, ROMs, source code, firmware, and financials.”
The sample data contained what appeared to be a list of “inactive” AMD employees along with their AMD phone numbers and email addresses and technical documentation related to AMD hardware such as graphics cards and computer processors.
IntelBroker said it was selling the data using only the Monero cryptocurrency and would welcome “middlemen” to negotiate the sale.
For its part, AMD is aware of the hacker’s claims and is investigating the incident.
“We are aware of a cybercriminal organization that claims to be in possession of stolen AMD data,” the company said in a widely reported statement.
“We are working closely with law enforcement officials and a third-party hosting partner to investigate the claim and the significance of the data.”
Previous victims of IntelBroker include Europol, Home Depot and Barclays Bank. A day after claiming the AMD hack, IntelBroker also published details of an alleged hack at iPhone maker Apple.
“Today I will be posting the internal source code of 3 of Apple’s most used tools for their internal site. Thanks for reading and enjoy!” IntelBroker wrote on the same hacking forum overnight.
According to the post, the exposed tools include AppleConnect-SSO, Apple-HWE-Confluence-Advanced, and AppleMacroPlugin.
“Intel has struck again with another violation, I love seeing it,” one forum user wrote in the same discussion thread.
