Australian Payments Plus has announced that ANZ will join Commonwealth Bank and National Australia Bank in signing up to its digital identity scheme.

Australian Payments Plus today announced that ANZ ANZ Plus customers will now have access to its ConnectID digital identity solution.

ConnectID allows people to verify their identity without having to share an onerous amount of personal information. Instead, they can ask a company to verify their identity with a trusted source, such as a bank.

This prevents people’s data from spreading from one company to another. ConnectID never sees the data; you simply verify them with the bank in question and then verify them with the company in question.

Gabriel Steele, general manager of identity and customer services at ANZ, said ANZ is pleased to help its customers take control of their identity.

“Not only do we see this better protecting our customers from the evolving threat of cybercrime, but we believe there is an equally significant opportunity to reduce the risk our business customers face by having more data than necessary,” Steele said in a statement.

“In partnership with ConnectID, we are pleased to provide ANZ Plus customers with the option to use a secure and convenient method to verify their identity with a growing list of approved merchants. “We look forward to shaping the network to deliver even greater customer value.”

ConnectID CEO Andrew Black said he is “delighted that ANZ Plus is available with ConnectID”.

“Your customers will enjoy greater control over the personal data a company shares and uses. ConnectID also ensures convenience and confidence for consumers and businesses, with fast and secure identity verification.

“AP+ is pleased to welcome ANZ Plus on this journey, leveraging the benefits of ConnectID to deliver greater functionality and security to customers and businesses across Australia.”

Both Commonwealth Bank of Australia and National Australia Bank signed up to ConnectID in October 2023, and Westpac said at the time it was preparing to support the scheme.
